Information on AKC Boxers
The average life span of a Boxer is 11-14 years, and the average weight for a male boxer is 65-70 pounds when full grown and for the female is 53-65 pounds. This breed come from two German Mastiff type dogs the Bullenbeiszer and the Barenbeiszer and later were breed with the Mastiff family and the Bulldog family. They were used for hunting and bull baiting. They are of the Mastif AKC working group.
The Boxer is happy, playful, curious, and very energetic. Boxers are highly intelligent, eager and quick to learn, but they can be hard-headed. They are wonderful family dogs, loyal and affectionate, we have 8 grandchildren 8 years old and under and our Madison loves them like they were her own. Boxers are known for the way they get along so well with children. They love to play or will curl up next to you while you read a book. They are happy just to be with you. They are a friend and companion.
A well brought up and properly socialized Boxer will also get along with his own kind and other househod pets. It has been said that the name Boxer came from the way the Boxer likes to use his front paws for just about everything. Some Boxers. mine especially, have been known to paw at her food bowl, flipping it upside-down and putting their front paws on top of the bowl, sliding it aroung the house barking and whining until someone fills it for them. It looks like a silly game but the Boxer is trying to tell you he's hungry! And my Madison will keep it up until I feed her. She is a smart one. When she wants outside she will growl at me and walk to the door, if I don't respond, she will do it over and over again. She does not give up!
The Boxers nature is to protect you, your family, and your home. They have a knack at knowing a freind from a stranger. Known visiors will be welcomed happily. They always want to make you happy by working or playing. Boxers need lots of human companionship. Even in old age are still extremely atheltic and energetic. Teach your Boxer not to be full of zeal, and especially not to jump up at people. When Madison jumped up at us when she was young, I would just put up my knee. After a few times of getting a knee in the chest she quickly learned not to jump at us. It sounds harsh, but if a young child was jumped on by a 60-70 pound dog, think of the damage they could do. Our Boxer can jump! While standing still, she got excited to see my daughter and her family, she jumped straight up and right over our 4 foot fence. This was the only time she did this, I think it scared her, but I know if she wanted out, she would be out! I think they should have been named bouncers instead of Boxers as they will bounce and jump everywhere. This is in their nature. Boxer have their tail croped and some crop the ears. Madison and our liter have had their dew claws removed.
Boxers make an excellent watchdog, they will restrain an intruder, and protect his family. They are well known for their courage. Boxers have been used for military and police work, along with search and rescue. Train your baby Boxer, start young, be firm and consistant. You must be the alpha role model. This breed requires a dominant but loving owner.
I have included a file down load below, it is information that I looked up on www.akc.org I found this site to be very helpful, But what it does not tell you is that once you own a Boxer, you will be so in love with them, that you will not be able to see your life without a Boxer Companion.
